Chapter Twenty-Two
Gabby had finally succumbed to her dadâs wishes. With Cameron missing and Matty still nowhere to be found, he wanted her back at Moroco in their family home until the police figured out where both Matty and Cameron had gone.
She sat on the back deck as the sun set over the beautiful horizon. The wheat crops that had been planted had taken well and grown perfectly her dad had said, and she watched the crops swaying gently in a light breeze in the distance. She smoked a cigarette slowly. She had given up smoking a few years earlier, but the first morning she had woken up after Matty disappeared she had raided Cameronâs drawer in their bedroom and found a pack, she needed them for the stress. She sipped from a wine glass and felt the bitter-sweet liquid beginning to make her feel lightheaded at the mixture of cigarettes and alcohol.
Her childhood home hadnât changed in the eight years it had been since she was there on her last ever visit. It had been a different time, she had been young and stupid back then, she realised now. She had hated her father for a long time after her motherâs death, and she wished she could take back some of the things that she had said. She still didnât know why she had resented him so much. After their final blow up he had given her space and hadnât pushed her to try and bring her back into the fold. Casey had tried a few times, told her to bury the hatchet, but she wasnât going to listen to her little brother; she wanted an apology directly from her dad.
Mattyâs disappearance had brought them back together, and she felt so grateful to watch him and her brother searching relentlessly for her son. Cameron going missing wasnât as simple. He was a damaged soul, and although they had been together now for a long time, she felt like there were parts of him she would never understand. The police had dropped hints at their ideas that he may have been involved in Mattyâs disappearance, but she wasnât having any of that talk. She pictured him holed up in some motel room far away, drunk or high, ruminating on the decisions he made the night of the rodeo and blaming himself for Matty going missing. He would turn up. She knew it.
Dust in the distance was her first inkling of visitors and her curiosity piqued when she saw that it was a four-wheel drive police car. She checked her phone and saw no missed calls and wondered if they were about to deliver good news. âDad! The police!â
John Blackwood popped his head out from the kitchen. âHave you heard from them today? Wonder what this is about?â
âMaybe theyâve found Matty,â she said, full of hope.
The car pulled up beside her and Archie, the Inspector, and Amelia got out. She ran down the steps of the deck two at a time, praying for a miracle.
